United Health Foundation Distributes Clinical Evidence
UnitedHealth Group has identified the industry-wide definition and implementation of a scientific, evidence-based system of medical practice as a necessary step in improving our nation’s health care system, and ensuring essential health care for all Americans.

Clinical Evidence is a trusted and reliable source

According to UnitedHealth Group Chairman and CEO, William McGuire, M.D., the health care system should be as concerned about the under-use of appropriate and scientifically proven medical treatments as about the overuse of treatment that is not supported by good science.

The United Health Foundation, solely funded by UnitedHealth Group, actively promotes clinicians’ use of evidence-based medicine through free distribution of the British Medical Journal (BMJ) publication, Clinical Evidence, twice a year to more than 500,000 of the nation’s physicians, physicians-in-training and nurses.

Physicians often have several options when it comes to treating a medical condition, as the science of medicine is continually being enhanced, reviewed and updated. Distribution of Clinical Evidence supports the decision-making of physicians by providing a trusted source for reliable, scientific medical information on the management of more than one thousand medical conditions.

The Foundation also has sent specialized information in the past. For example, in 2002, 54,000 pediatricians and 74,000 mental health professionals received a version of Clinical Evidence specific to their practice.

BMJ assembles a panel of international experts from a variety of medical disciplines to produce Clinical Evidence each year and is solely responsible for content.

The United Health Foundation is encouraged by the warm reception the book has received from many physicians, who say it has made a significant impact on their practice.
